Water Polo Canada Names Elite Coach and Olympic Medallist Kyriaki Liosi to Lead its Women’s National Team

Jun. 10, 2025

Ottawa, June 10, 2025 - Water Polo Canada is pleased to announce the selection of successful elite coach and Olympic medallist Kyriaki Liosi to lead its Senior Women’s National Team as its new Head Coach.

Liosi, who was captain of the Women’s Greek National Team, represented her country at two Olympic Games, in 2004 - where she won the silver medal - and in 2008. She also represented her country at numerous other international competitions, including five FINA World Championships (now World Aquatics Championships), with her team winning gold at the 2011 edition and taking the 4th position in 2009.

Liosi also won gold competing in the 2005 FINA World League as well as two silver medals at the LEN (Ligue européenne de natation) European Championships (2010 and 2012). Additionally, she has represented Greece at two World League Super Finals (2009 and 2011) and at the World Cup (2010). Through her distinguished career as an athlete, Kyriaki Liosi played for such internationally renowned clubs as Olympiacos (1998-2003), Glyfada (2003-2005) and Vouliagmeni (2005-2013). With the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club, Liosi won gold at the 2009 and 2010 LEN Champions Cup, as well as at the 2009 and 2010 Super Cup.

Following her athletic career, Liosi, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sport Science with a specialization in Water Polo from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, successfully moved into coaching roles. Over the last 13 years, she has held various coaching positions, starting as Head Coach of U15 & U17 girls’ Teams while also serving as Assistant Coach of the Senior Women’s Team at the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club, and she has been the Head Coach of that Senior Team since 2022.

Under Liosi’s coaching and leadership, the Vouliagmeni club team just won gold at the 2025 Greek Swimming Federation A1 Women’s Water Polo Championships, which ended May 31 and where her team won the finals by defeating Olympiacos (which recently came in third in the 2025 European Aquatics Women’s Champions League).

"I am truly honoured to join Water Polo Canada and lead the Women’s National Team,” said Kyriaki Liosi, who will be working on a part-time basis with Water Polo Canada. “Water polo has shaped who I am, and I’m excited to bring that passion to this talented group. Teamwork is the foundation of success, and I look forward to working closely with the athletes and staff as we pursue our shared goals. I’m proud to have this opportunity to contribute to the continued success of Team Canada on the world stage.”

“As our Senior Women's National Team program enters the new Olympic cycle, we are delighted to welcome a top-level Head Coach like Coach Liosi, whose strong leadership will take our athletes to new heights, and enable the women's program to evolve so as to ensure sustainable domestic improvement and long-term, continued success on the international stage,” said Water Polo Canada’s High Performance Director, Olivier Pineau. “Working closely with our Pathway Technical Lead and our entire team, Coach Liosi will also use her expertise to ensure an effective system is in place to strengthen our National Team program over the long term.”
