Canada finishes 7th at the 2022 FINA Women's World League Super Final

Nov. 07, 2022

Montreal, November 7, 2022. The Canadian Women’s Senior National Team finished 7th at the 2022 FINA Women's World League Super Final held November 2-6, 2022, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

Canada, which was in action for the first time since the World Championships in June, had a slow start to the tournament losing to Italy 16-9 and the defending World Champion, the United States,11-6. The Canadian team showed their determination and perseverance by defeating the bronze medallists of the last World Championships, the Netherlands, 15-14.

In the qualifying match, the Canadian team battled hard against Australia in a very close match, but lost by a narrow margin, 12-10. Finally, the Canadian women concluded the tournament with a great win against New Zealand, 13-6, to finish 7th overall.

Although the final result was not what the players and the coaching group had hoped for, there are many positive elements on which to build for the future as mentioned by Olivier Pineau, High Performance Director at Water Polo Canada:

“We came short of our performance targets. Nonetheless, we emerge from this tournament with new leads and precious learning that will allow us to enact the required adjustments and enhancements ahead of the imminent Paris Olympic qualification period. Our team has, at times through this event, shown the true brilliance it's capable of, such as when it defeated the Netherlands team. The best is yet to come.”

Several of the Canadian Women’s National Team players will soon be back with their respective professional clubs in Europe to continue their season. For the others, it will be the NCAA or the National Training Centre located at the National Sport Institute in Montreal.

The next tournaments for the Canadian team will be in 2023.
