Event Sanction


Purpose of Sanctioning

Water Polo Canada (WPC) is the official sanctioning body for all water polo events in Canada.
Sanctioning ensures events are:

  • Safe and fair, following national and international standards.
  • Consistent with WPC’s Athlete Development Matrix and LTAD framework.
  • Covered under WPC insurance policies.
  • Advertised on the national event calendar.

Which Events Require a Sanction?

  • No Sanction Required: practices, scrimmages, fundraising events.
  • Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) Sanction Required: intra-provincial tournaments and leagues, provincial team training camps.
  • Water Polo Canada Sanction Required:
    • National level competitions and training camps.
    • Interprovincial tournaments and leagues.
    • Events with international athletes/teams.

 

Sanction Fees (2025-26)

  • Interprovincial tournaments/leagues: $100 per sanction.
  • Events with international teams/athletes: $250 per sanction.
  • PSO fees: May set their own fees for provincial events.

Application Timelines

  • Applications open 180 days before an event.
  • Applications must be submitted at least 60 days before the event.
  • WPC will review and schedule a follow-up call within 7 business days of receiving an application.

Application Process

  • Tournament organizer gathers required information and documents.
  • Identify a qualified Referee-in-Chief and secure their letter of acknowledgement.
  • Submit the online application in RAMP and pay the sanction fee.
  • WPC Education & Events Manager reviews and schedules a planning call.
  • Once approved:
    • The event is added to the WPC calendar.
    • A sanction letter and insurance certificate (if required) are provided.
    • The organizer receives ongoing support from WPC leading up to the event.

Requirements for a Sanctioned Event

  • Host must be a WPC Member (PSO or club) in good standing.
  • Certificate of Insurance naming the host facility.
  • All participants (athletes, coaches, referees, volunteers) must:
    • Be registered in WPC’s database.
    • Be Safe Sport compliant.
  • Head Referee appointed to oversee officiating and evaluations.
  • Field of Play and equipment must meet WPC standards.
  • Event schedule must align with LTAD/ADM guidelines.
  • Adequate referees and trained minor officials must be provided.

International Teams

If international teams participate, the host must secure and submit:

  • Certificate of insurance from the foreign federation naming WPC as additional insured.
  • Letter of good standing from the foreign federation listing all participants.
  • Proof of travel medical insurance.
  • Roster with photos for each International Team - Template
  • All documents must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to competition.

The Emergency Action Plan (EAP) must always be tailored to your event, with consideration of normal and potential situations in a public pool facility. Support is available through the Education and Events Manager.
